New Gold Sink: Empowered Rifts

by - 8 years ago

Yep you read that right, Diablo III is getting a new gold sink with Patch 2.4! When opening a Greater Rift, you have the option to empower it by spending gold. When you empower a grift, you increase the number of rolls you get when upgrading a legendary gem but only if you complete it within the time frame.

The amount of gold you need to spend to empower a grift scales for different levels. For example, a grift 50 will cost 50 million gold and a grift 75 will cost 540 million gold to empower. You can check out the official preview down below!

While not everyone is a virtual billionaire, we’ve heard from plenty of players that there just aren’tenough ways to spend your piles of filthy lucre. We agree, and our next feature aims at giving you a way to turn all that gold laying around into a greater chance of glory with Empowered Rifts.

When you enter a Greater Rift, you’ll have the option to choose to make your attempt an Empowered Rift. By spending some of your hard earned gold, you’ll increase the number of possible Legendary Gem upgrades at the end of a successful run by one, to a maximum of four. The amount of gold this will cost you varies based on the tier of Greater Rift you’re attempting, so spend wisely!

So how do you guys like this feature as a gold sink? Do you think it’s something that you will spend your gold on? Let us know in the comments below!

I understand that we are getting *a lot* of content with patch 2.4. That said, I was hoping the gold sink would be much more creative. If the 4th roll is the exact same as the previous three then that means we are pretty much in the exact same boat as before with no excitement at all.

Think of it from a value perspective. If my character can do a GR 50 in 5 minutes then why would I feel good about spending 50 million for just an extra roll? I can also see people using boon of the hoarder shenanigans combined with other items just to efficiently farm gold.
Even if it’s the most efficient at the beginning of a season, I’m not interested in it.

I was hoping for something far more interesting. Perhaps paying 100 million to get a random shrine effect for 1 hour (wouldn’t work in GR’s) It would help when you wanna sit down to farm materials or bounties. Hell I’d even pay to listen to all the lore books in chronological order in-game while I’m playing.
