Ars Arcanum: Aether Walker

by - 9 years ago

Books have often been society’s only bastion of light for passing along knowledge that would otherwise be lost to time or convoluted by the oral tradition. In order to provide new and old adventurers with as much knowledge of what to expect on their journey in Sanctuary, we created this tome of knowledge – Ars Arcanum. We will regularly feature a Legendary weapon or armor piece, discussing its stand-alone powers and capabilities, as well as how it may synergize with new builds or other items.

Heading back to the land of Season One exclusive items, I decided to take on a weapon that doesn’t necessarily fit into the must have for major DPS category. This week, we’re going to be discussing the mobile Wizard’s best friend, Aether Walker.

Aether Walker

Why is it good?

A few friends have noted that they’ve gotten some interesting Torment 6 speed rift killing builds out of this item, but, for me, where it truly shines is in the speed runs that were added to the game for Season One – Sprinter for Normal and Speed Racer for Hardcore.

These Conquests require precise and detailed knowledge of the game from the maps, to quest spawns, and everything in between. Chief among this knowledge is the ability to gear your character for speed and the Wizard has some great advantages over other classes through the use of Teleport. Each class’s special movement skills function a little differently, with pros and cons present for all six. Where Teleport might fail is the fact that it’s cooldown based, so you can’t truly spam it the way a Demon Hunter can their Vault. Now you see why Aether Walker is so excellent inside of speed runs. When moving quickly is the name of the game, taking Teleport off of cooldown opens up some really unique movement for the Wizard class. Combined with the more offensive rune of Calamity, you can turn your Teleport into a nice run and gun skill that allows you to deal damage while continuing on your merry way.

Who is it good for?

You may have noticed the word Wizard all over this post. This one is Wizard exclusive as a one-handed wand.

Where can I find it?

This item is currently exclusive to Seasonal play and can also be gambled from Kadala. I actually just found one on my Crusader a few nights ago funny enough. Once Season One ends, all Wizards will be able to wield this wand.

The Fluff

Virgil quickly lashed together remnants of his old broken wands and an unidentified artifact and sanctified them with his own blood, allowing him to teleport to safety and to begin formulating his revenge.

According to my quick research, Virgil is actually in the game! You never meet him alive though; he was the one the priest left to guard the sword piece inside of Wortham Church. As I already spoiled, we happen upon his corpse, but this weapon seems to suggest that he was anxious to have his revenge when he was alive against some others that had wronged him. If he had stopped Maghda, would Cain still be alive? Hm…
