Streamer Spotlight: Redshoes

by - 10 years ago

Diablo 3 is played by a huge variety of people around the world. Some might play it once a week, some might play it several hours a day, and others might even make part of their living playing the game. You can found a great sample of size at Twitch.TV, where you can find several people streaming this game we love everyday. On Twitch you can find Diablo pros, funny personalities, and even people who are just learning the game. Streamer Spotlight is here to share the stories of some those interesting players.

Welcome back to Streamer Spotlight, where in this second edition we are going to take a complete 180. Last time we focused on Blizzard MVP Jaetch and the Vizjerei Clan, but not all of the streamers are ultra hardcore dedicated Diablo 3 pros. There are many people who are much more casual about their play, yet still like to share it with the world.

I found this out firsthand while doing some research about streamers, I came upon Redshoes’ first playthrough of Reaper of Souls. I was amazed at first, after so many hours put into this game some things have just become second nature to me. But watching the stream I realized that things that are obvious to me and many more dedicated players, might not be so obvious to the casuals. Watching Redshoes go through the story with her Demon Hunter opened my eyes in a certain way, it put things into perspective, and most importantly it showed me that you can actually have some fun even when you are not min/maxing to the extreme.

better not forget to change your game on twitch next time 😛

DR: Hey Red! Glad to have you with us today, could you tell us more about you? We’d like to know how old are you, where are you from, and a little light on your gaming background.

RS: Ok, sure thing! I’m 22 years old and I’m from a town on the outskirts of Sheffield in England. I first started gaming at a very young age when my parents bought our very first console, which was a Playstation. I enjoyed playing Pandemonium, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider and a lot of the well known and some lesser known Playstation titles. I also got a Gameboy, which my parents bought me for Christmas after I started watching Pokémon on tv, so I played the Pokémon games too as well as tetris. When I was about 11 years old, we got out first computer, and that’s when I started pc gaming, with my favourite games at the time being Age of Empires 2 and Warcraft 3.

I’ve pretty much gamed on both consoles and the pc since.

DR: That’s pretty cool, Final Fantasy and Pokemon were some of my favorites as a kid too! Your stream is pretty cool, but what else do you do besides Streaming?

RS: Not much, really. I’ve recently finished my studies at university (tourism with Spanish) so now I’ve moved back in with my parents and I’m job hunting and learning to drive.

DR: Spanish is my native Language, now I like your stream even more! But moving on with the Interview, why Redshoes? Also how long have you had that nickname?

RS: I can’t even remember why Redshoes. I remember first using the name when I was about 12, when I started a new game on Black and White and it asked me to put a name in. I’ve used it ever since.

DR: And how did you decide to start streaming? Any particular inspirations?

RS: There’s a bit of a story to this, so this will be a long answer. When you study a language at uni, you’re required to do a year abroad placement in a country that primarily uses this language, as I was studying Spanish, I chose to do mine in Spain. Unfortunately, homesickness and culture shock proved to be too much for me, and after 3 months, I returned home. The university was very understanding, and allowed me to remain in England for the rest of the year as long as I made a couple of alterations to my degree programme.
Afterwards, my confidence was pretty low (it’s quite a blow to your confidence realising that you can’t cope with something and having to quit as a result) and I didn’t have anything to do. I got back into World of Warcraft to pass time and also began to watch some videos on Youtube and occasionally livestreams on Twitch. My boyfriend at the time suggested I start streaming to try and help regain some confidence and about a month later, I had my first ever stream. It was quite disastrous and I accidently streamed myself checking Twitter and looking something up on google, because I didn’t know how to use stream software and forgot to end stream after I was done! But I kept at it.

DR: Should’ve come to my home country of Chile, we speak the worst form of Spanish possible. If you understand Chilean Spanish, you understand all spanish. Anyway, You stream many different games, what’s the thought process you put on game selection?

RS: I tend to watch other peoples streams, and if a game that they stream looks good, I’ll probably stream it myself. I also stream games that I enjoyed when I was younger (such as Final Fantasy) and I also see what games are going to be released or have recently been released a lot, to see if there are any good ones that I would enjoy streaming.

DR: The games are cool and all, but you are a pretty interesting person yourself. What’s the deal with the hair color?

RS: I’ve dyed my hair since I was around 14, but before this hair colour I had almost completely gotten rid of the hair dye. I just felt brave one day and decided to dye my hair a bright colour, and kept it ever since.

DR: And you do not stand alone, You are part of a streaming team called the Bearded Nation. Who are they? and how come you don’t have a beard?

RS: The Bearded Nation is a group created by another streamer, Gamersmack. We’re basically just a group of friends who stream and help one another grow by promoting one another on our own channels and Twitters, a beard isn’t actually required to join, although I should probably get a fake one. 😛

DR: Also, please rate the beard on BlizzPro’s own Bearded Gamer, Chris Arnone.

RS: That’s a very well trimmed beard I must say! I’ll give it a 7/10, I prefer lumberjack beards, but he obviously puts a lot of time and care into it.

DR: So you’ve played some Diablo 3 and Reaper of Souls, what sold you on the game? Ever played the old Diablo games?

RS: No, I never played the old Diablo games, which is why I wanted to play this one! I’d heard a lot of good stuff about the old ones so I was pretty hyped for Diablo 3. I enjoyed it, despite it’s flaws (real money auction house and a lack of end game content being two major ones for me) so hearing about Reaper of Souls planning on fixing that got me very interested and I just had to buy it.

DR: What do you like and dislike the most about the current state of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls?

RS: I’m currently levelling my first Crusader (yes, it took me this long to decide to give it a go) and so far I am really enjoying it, I wish I’d done this sooner because I think I have a new favourite class. I enjoy the fact that it added rifts and bounties at the end because it does add so much more, but I also feel like it hasn’t added enough, which is main issue with Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls at the moment.

Thankfully, after playing on the PTR for the new patch I’ve found that Blizzard are working towards fixing this, with seasons, greater rifts and the leaderboards. I think that adding a competitive element will really help with the whole “What to do now” at the end of the game.

DR: Who’s your favorite Character from the Diablo Franchise and why?

RS: The Scoundrel. I think he’s hilarious and I love hearing his advances get rejected by my characters, if I can have him as my follower and not die constantly, you can guarantee I will. I also like Adria, well, actually I hate Adria, but I think she’s an excellent bad guy because you do hate her, and killing her is so satisfying, definitely a well done bad guy there.

DR: Do you play other Blizzard games?

RS: Not at the moment, no, but I have in the past. I played Warcraft 3 for years and casually played some Dota on Battle.net, I’ve also played World of Warcraft from Wrath of the Lich King to Mists of Pandaria, during which I raided a bit with a guild and tried to collect as many mounts and pets as I could, I may return to that when Warlords of Draenor comes out. I’ve also played Hearthstone, but I wasn’t very good at that and I ended up just getting frustrated at losing all the time, so I stopped.

DR: What’s your streaming schedule?

RS: I aim to stream every day from 5pm (GMT+1) to whenever I feel tired. I also have certain days where I will stream a particular game.

Monday: Minecraft & Game of my choice
Tuesday: Game of my choice
Wednesday: Game of my choice
Thursday: Diablo III & Game of my choice
Friday: Final Fantasy
Saturday: Game of my choice & I Wanna Be The Boshy
Sunday: Transistor and Bastion

If changes are made I usually post them on my Twitter to let people know.

DR: What are your plans for the future, I heard that you are planning to buy a new gaming rig so you can stream newer games and stream on better quality. What else can we expect from Miss Chelsea Redshoes?

RS: Yes, I am, I currently play and stream using a laptop, so I’m quite excited about the new pc. Once I get that I’m hoping to play Skyrim and both Dark Souls games. I may also get back into playing an MMO, but I’m not exactly sure about that just yet. Basically, expect me to play through a lot more games.

DR: Any closing thoughts?

RS: Thanks for interviewing me, I really appreciate it. Also, to anybody who may be reading this and is thinking about giving streaming a shot, go for it, I’ve had a lot of fun doing it and made quite a few friends in the process.
