Just like his predecessor, Diablo III has secret level. Instead of fighting demons and other hellish monsters, you’re tasked with raiding a land of pink, rainbows, and happiness where you are supposed to conduct a massacre against unicorns, teddy bears, and even flowers.

But getting there is not easy task, you are going to need the Staff of Herding. The staff of Herding is a craftable item, and its plans drop from our friend Izual in Act IV.

After you have the plans, you’ll need to collect five rare crafting materials: in Act I, the Black Mushroom from the Cathedral and Leoric’s Shinbone from Leoric’s Manor ; in Act 2, Wirt’s Bell from town vendor Squirt, and Liquid Rainbow from the mysterious cave in the Dalghur Oasis; and last but not least, the random Gibbering Gemstone drop from rare spawn Chiltara in Act III’s Caverns of Frost.

But you are likely to need more detail than that. Lets invite the lovely Minerva to give you the indications.

Getting the Items

All farming can be done in Adventure Mode, although Story Mode provides different waypoints that can be used to great effect.

The Black Mushroom: Act 1 – Found In Cathedral Level 1. Take the waypoint directly to that level. Click on the dark/black mushrooms, they will be growing on the floor somewhere in the bookrooms. They can only spawn inside those rooms and they are fairly rare. They are not guaranteed the spawn so you might find reseting the game quite a few times.

Leoric’s Shinbone: Act 1 – Found In Leoric’s Manor.  Take the waypoint to the Northern Highlands  and run up to the Leoric’s Hunting Grounds. From there you can enter Leoric’s Manor Courtyard on the left side of the map. Inside that same courtyard you will find the entrance to Leoric’s Manor. Check the fireplace for the burnt logs, if they have spawned click on them and you’ll get your shinbone. Otherwise, just break everything on sight.

You might be better off by doing this part on story mode, as you’ll find a way point straight to the Manor. All you have to do is double back, as the rooms where you can find the Shinbone are closer to the entrance.

Wirt’s Bell: Act 2 – Found at the Town Vendor by the name of  Squirt, she a little blonde girl that spawns to the right of the waypoint. Out of all five, this is by far the easiest item to get.

Liquid Rainbow: Act 2 – Found in The Mysterious Cave.  Take waypoint to Dalghur Oasis. The location of the cave is determined at random. It can be found by opening the mysterious chest in the dungeon. This Cave is a random spawn and is not guaranteed to spawn in every Dalghur Oasis Map.Warning, this can be a very rare spawn – so don’t get discouraged.

Gibbering Gemstone: Act 3 – Found in The Caverns of Frost I or II. Take waypoint to Bridge of Korsikk and run up to the Fields of Slaughter, the Caverns of Frost can spawn anywhere on the map. It is a random spawn, that will either be Cavern of Frost or Icefall Caves. In order for the Gemstone to drop you must find and kill rare spawn Chiltara, so you might have to come back to the Caverns of Frost several time before you can leave with your Gemstone. Remember that Chiltara can spawn in both floors so search accordingly.

Crafting the Staff

Once you collect all that five items, you can pay Haedrig a visit and have him forge the Staff of Herding. Make sure that you are on the Weapon’s Tab and that you are showing “All” rather than “Highest Usable”. The Staff of Herding can be found under, of course, staffs.

Finding the Cow King

With the Staff of Herding in your hands, you can now head to the Glowing Crevasse on Act I’s Old Tristram Road. There’s you’ll meet with the Spirit of the Cow King who will grant you access to the cow level Whimsyshire.

Weapons Found ONLY In Whimsyshire:

Spectrum: Drops From Creampuff Killaire (Team Unicorn), Maisie the Daisy Maulin Sorely (Team Unicorn), Midnight Sparkle Miss Hell (Team Unicorn), Nightmarity R’Lyeh (Team Unicorn), Tubbers

Horadric Hamburger: Only Drops From Pinatas. And only Daggers can be transmogged into hamburgers

When hunting for the Spectrum or Horadric Hamburger it is easiest to hunt in a group. However, it can also easily be done solo. The first thing to do it to skip every monster that is not one of the special purple monsters that was listed above. In addition to this you should only be stopping to open Pots of Gold or hit Pinatas. Although the map outlay is random, it is easiest to go either clockwise or counter clockwise in direction. The key is to do more of a weave in and out of the map, although this is not perfect, it is the most efficient way to run through Whimsyshire.
